Thursday dawned as windy as the wednesday but blue skies and sunshine instead of rain. Looking down at the Atlantic showed distant whitecaps and sort of westerly wind. A trip to Padstow hooked us in for a cracking day at Daymer Bay. The tide was on its way out, as we arrived there were still wavelets wrapping round onto the main beach. Wind blowing F5 direct onto the carpark. Few out already and fully powered. I rigged a 5.5m on wave board and hit the water, wind maybe dropping, but new peaks and a bit of spray now starting to appear on far side of estuary. Headed away from crowd (10-15) upwind to other side. Out there the swell was pushing straight into the river and then breaking over the sand bars. It was cross-off and chest high and good for some proper turns. Getting upwind again was tide assisted. Wind was patchy under the hills at the outside gybe (doom bar), but on most waves the wind was funnelling and plenty. Strange to be wave riding in port tack conditions after south coast on opposite tack, but was soon sliding the fin out. The coastal beaches were virtually unsailable due to onshores and here was easy fun with soft sand and no shorebreak etc. highly recomended, especially for those seeking first wave experience.
